The Killzone 2 Experience

So, I got my hands on the Killzone 2 demo, reading all the hype surrounding this game I was anxious to see what it’s about.  Before I dive into it, I’ll make note that I also recently played Killzone 1 for the first time to see if the hype was justified based on the previous game’s gameplay or just the promise of outstanding graphical prowess.  I found Killzone one truely solid achieving better gameplay than some current next gen titles, sound was good, only complaint was the Helghast screams of “Over their heads” “Attack” that was quite annoying.

Onto the Killzone 2 demo, the controls are almost identical with some difference in face button mapping. The FPS experts will probably tell you not to play with rumble enabled and that’s probably a good thing for Killzone2, the kickback from the weapons is insane, short bursts of fire is ideal if playing with rumble as you might find it a bit difficult to keep aim on the enemy if you’re trying to empty a whole clip in someone, this also adds realism to the game , this holds true too in Killzone 1.

Graphically, Killzone 2 is amazing, the character models, the world, it’s all one big immersive world . What I like most about it though is how it takes focus away from the gun, if you take notice in the demo, you’ll see that part of the gun closest to the edge of the screen is out of ‘focus’ kind of like how if you are looking at something at a distance how something in the foreground would look. Is it intentional or just because it’s an early build, if it is, it’s a great design on the devs part. Along with the slight motion blur you get at the tip of the gun as you move around, this is top notch.

Every good game needs good enemies and the AI in Killzone are no slouches, these guys wouldn’t rush you out in the open, but cleverly hide behind cover and try to take you out while slowly advancing towards your position. That makes killing them all the more fun, to watch as they helmets fly off their heads and they duck for cover only for you then to put couple shots to their heads watching as their blood skirt and they lifeless bodies fall to the ground which will never cease to amaze as they’re numerous ways in which they do it.

Sound is superb, every scream, every gunshot, it’s all just right and atleast within the demo the annoying scream of the Helghast are dialed down from those in Killzone 1.

Killzone 2 though is not without it’s faults, some have complained about aiming lag, I may have experience this but after a couple play throughs it’s like ‘what aiming lag?’ and headshots come much easier. Bearing in mind it’s a demo and most likely an old build I’ll just make note about some graphical issues, like sand bags looking more like a poorly built brick wall than actual sand bags.

I didn’t had time nor did I care to take time out of the gameplay to sit and analyze the hell out of the game trying to find glitches and what not so I’m wrapping up by saying “Killzone 2, the ultimate experience on Playstaion 3. Get it, Play it, Play it Again”.

  1. Damn, I’m still waiting for the demo to come out on the US psn. I could get it if I reserve the game and put down $5, but it’s a demo and demos should be free no matter what.
